SPACES model training workshop, Diani, Kenya
The ESPA-SPACES team is holding a modeler training workshop at the Leopard Beach Hotel in Diani, Kenya from 20th to 25th April, 2015. The workshop brings together researchers and students from the Kenyan Marine Fisheries Research Institute and Wildlife Conservation Society Coral Reef Conservation Project, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique), Stockholm Resilience Centre (Sweden), the University of Exeter (UK), and the University of British Colombia (Canada). Romina Martin from the Stockholm Resilience Centre is leading the training.
The training aims to train both the SPACES team, and collaborators from institutions in Kenya and Mozambique on the potential and practical limits of modelling to investigate the systems in which they are doing research. Linking poverty alleviation and sustainable coastal ecosystems in Mozambique
On the 10th and 11th February, 2015, SPACES ran a two day workshop in Mozambique to improve understanding of poverty alleviation and coastal ecosystems in both urban and rural areas in the coastal region, for both local participants, and the SPACES team. The workshop took place at Pemba Beach Hotel, Pemba, and attracted 27 participants from a wide range of organizations including government, community-based organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
The workshop used tools and methods that facilitated system thinking – thinking about how different parts of the coastal systems are connected, and how change happens over time. The tools also ensured close interactions among the participants and facilitated sharing of knowledge and experience. The two major tools and processes that were used included:

Looking to the future: Linking poverty alleviation and sustainable coastal ecosystems in coastal Kenya and Mozambique
The first round of stakeholder workshops are taking place in the next two weeks in Kenya and Mozambique.
3-4th February in Diani, Kenya
10-11th February in Pemba, Mozambique.
These workshops aim to introduce managers, scientists, local government and community leaders to the SPACES project, and to involve them in participatory mapping of the social and ecological dimensions that are significant in alleviating or maintaining poverty on the coast
